Ground Casualty

SSG Ronald E. Harwell was a Unit Supply Sergeant serving with Advisory Team 16, Headquarters, Military Assist Command Vietnam (MACV) Advisors, MACV. In 1970, MACV Team 16 was located in Quang Tin Province, RVN. As a Supply Specialist, Harwell demonstrated great resourcefulness by keeping team members provided with needed supplies and equipment. At times his duties strayed beyond supply tasks. On September 2, 1970, he was helping set up an antenna tower at the MACV compound at Tam Ky to improve Headquarters communication with the various Team 16 operatives throughout the province. The structure consisted of 54’ of galvanized pipe. While constructing the radio mast, an 18’ section broke away, striking Harwell in the back of the head. He died instantly after sustaining a skull fracture and fatal brain injury. A medivac helicopter arrived shortly after the accident to recover the body. Team 16 personnel solemnly organized his personal belongings and they were returned to his family in Georgia. A veteran with fourteen years of service, Harwell was 32 years old.
