He had a dazed looked on his face when I asked him something. I later realized it was shock. We put him on a stretcher and his head hung over, I shouted that to Lt Gorney who was on one end of the stretcher, he stopped and I took his head in my hand and we ran through the sand to the helicopter. I couldn't believe how fast they ran, but I kept up.

He had been near the writer Bernard Fall when Fall stepped on a
mine. It was a big mine as I saw the black cloud over the tree line. It killed Fall and a Gunny Highland a photographer attached to Fall.

We were on the Street Without Joy a place where the French had
lost many men in the 50's, and a title of one of Fall's Books.

I think of him all to often, as we heard about his death the next day. The blood loss was too great.
