Ground Casualty
SP4 Edward L. Harris was an infantryman serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. In early September 1971, he was at Lassiter Heliport near Bien Hoa city in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. A little after midnight on September 4th, military police (MP’s) investigating a disturbance at the Officer’s Club in Harris’ company area found him attempting to break into the building. The MP’s confronted Harris who resisted and fought with them, disarming one officer of his baton. Harris then chased down the disarmed officer with the club while the other MP pursued. The pursuing MP fired a shot over Harris’ head to get him to comply, but he continued chasing the other officer. The other officer then turned and fired his service weapon at Harris, striking him in the left chest. The round penetrated his heart; he expired within five minutes. Harris, 19, an Army volunteer, had less than two months left in his tour of Vietnam. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

honoring you...
A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.
