Misadventure (Friendly fire)

PFC Dennis G. Harmon was a military policeman serving with the 66th MP Company. His unit was located at Phu Tai, west of the coastal city Qui Nhon in Binh Dinh Province, RVN. The MP’s of the 66th MP Company performed a variety of duties including convoy escort, patrols, and perimeter security. They were occasionally transported to merchant ships anchored off Qui Nhon to protect the vessels from attacks by Viet Cong (VC) posing as fishermen or enemy divers seeking to sabotage the ships. One method of discouraging VC swimmers was to periodically drop a live grenade overboard. On April 14, 1966, less than three weeks into his tour, Harmon was preparing to toss a World War II-era grenade into the Qui Nhon Bay when it detonated prematurely. Critically injured in the blast, he expired while being transported by boat to a U.S. medical dispensary in Qui Nhon. No service was held in the wake of his loss; however, an MP he befriended in the short time he was in Vietnam created an impromptu memorial adjacent to the ammo dump at Phu Tai.
