Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Richard William Hagel, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Richard, I will always remember you!

I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC on July 4th, 2008. My first mission was to find the name of my young friend and neighbor growing up ~ RICHARD W. HAGEL.
I found you at 55E, Row 15 and it was at that moment that a flood of memories came back of the days when I lived next door to a fine young boy during our elementary years in Hayward, CA. As time went on, I moved away and spent my high school years in Concord, CA. I later became a flight attendant for Trans International Airlines and made many MAC flights into Vietnam, starting in 1969. I did not know, at that time, that you had already given your life for your country.

My brother, Dennis Terrell also served in Vietnam and we were blessed to have him return home to us.

Richard, I honor you and thank you for your service to our country and the sacrifice you made.
