Ground Casualty
PFC George W. Baker was a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator serving with D Company, 93rd Construction Engineer Battalion, 34th Engineer Group, 20th Engineer Brigade, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam Engineer Command. During 1970, the 34th’s Group supported combat operations and conducted construction projects in the Mekong Delta area of Military Region IV. The 93rd Construction Engineer Battalion focused on road improvement and construction. On June 9, 1970, Baker was part of a crew spreading lime on provincial Route TL-24, 11 miles east of My Tho in Dinh Tuong Province, RVN. The engineers added lime to the poorly drained delta soil to improve its strength, durability, and load bearing performance. At 4:00 PM, the men wrapped up their workday. Several of them, including Baker, took to the Cho Gao Canal adjacent to the road to wash the lime off themselves. Reportedly, for no apparent reason, Baker suddenly dove into the canal. He failed to resurface and drowned. His body was later recovered. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
