SP4 Bobby R. Griffin was a Food Service Specialist serving with the 258th Personnel Service Company, Americal Division, at Chu Lai in Quang Tin Province, RVN. The Personnel Services Company provided a variety of personnel and administrative support to the headquarters and attached units. In Griffin’s case, this included food preparation, procurement, storage, and distribution. The area where he was stationed was on the coast adjacent to the South China Sea. On October 20, 1967, Griffin was recreational swimming at a beach near Chu Lai when he was pulled under by currents and drowned. His body was recovered and positively identified five days later.
