Ground Casualty
SP4 Charles H. Adams was an artilleryman serving with B Battery, 5th Battalion, 2nd Artillery, 23rd Artillery Group, II Field Force, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. In late 1970, the 23rd Artillery Group provided heavy and medium artillery coverage throughout Military Region III. Most heavy artillery units were deployed along the Cambodian-Vietnam border to support Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) cross-border operations. Adams’ section was positioned in Tay Ninh Province backing ARVN maneuver units. On November 14, 1970, a Saturday, he was enjoying some free time with others at an authorized swimming area on the Vam Co Dong River six kilometers (3.6 miles) southwest of Tay Ninh West Base. At approximately 6:05 PM, Adams was lying on an air mattress when he slipped off into the water. He was not seen again. The two other enlisted men with him searched for him but were able to locate Adams in the muddy water. His body was later recovered. Adams was 20 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
As long as you are remembered you will never die...
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
As long as you are remembered you will never die...
