Final Mission of SP6 Charles J. Bair

Final Mission of SP6 Charles J. Bair
On January 29, 1966, a U.S. Army helicopter CH-47A (tail number 63-07913) from the 133rd Assault Support Helicopter Company (ASHC) was on a resupply mission when the forward transmission froze inflight about five miles north of Phu Cat in Binh Dinh Province while carrying a slingload of JP-4 (fuel). The mechanical failure caused the aircraft to crash, impacting the ground in an inverted position. There were no survivors. The lost crew included aircraft commander CW2 Frank Roop, pilot CAPT William R. Hardin, crew chief SP6 Charles J. Bair, gunner SP4 Richard E. Arnold, and crewman SP5 Claude T. Turner. A single passenger was also killed, SP4 Fortunato Luna Jr. [Taken from vhpa.org and armyaircrews.com]
