Misadventure (Friendly fire)

During the month of May 1968, the 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, conducted unilateral and joint offensive operations within its area of responsibility in Quang Nam Province, RVN, to locate and destroy enemy forces, bases, and logistic installations with a primary focus on those forces which posed the greatest threat to important population and economic centers and the security of friendly military installations. Part of the Marines’ strategy was to conduct aggressive patrolling. On May 5th, an ambush squad from Company H, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines was in position one mile southwest of Nam-O Bridge when they spotted a Viet Cong (VC) crossing a river at 9:15 PM. The ambush team opened fire with small arms and a M79 grenade launcher, killing the VC. They then observed movement to the southwest and requested a fire mission on the suspected enemy position. Before being able to assess the damage inflicted by the mortar rounds, the team detected further movement in the same area and called in a second fire mission on the same coordinates. Moments later, six 81mm mortars landed directly on the Marine team, killing one man, PFC Billy R. Greene, and wounding ten. A reaction force was dispatched to their location, helped organize four medical evacuations, and searched the area of enemy movement with negative results. The evacuations of the seriously wounded were completed at 10:27 PM.
