Final Mission of Pfc Laurence B. Green

During November 1968, the 7th Engineer Battalion provided support for the III Marine Amphibious Force within the Da Nang area in Quang Nam Province, RVN. The battalion was assigned maintenance responsibility for 70 miles of road and conducted daily mine sweeps on 40 miles of those roads. During the month, Company B was responsible for upgrading National Route QL-1 for Class 50 freight traffic and maintaining QL-12 in both directions (east and west). On the morning of November 6th, a Company B mine sweep team was ambushed on QL-1 two kilometers (1.2 miles) northwest of Dien Ban when ten 105mm artillery shells strung in trees were detonated. The blasts killed four U.S. Marines, four Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) soldiers, and one Republic of Korea marine. Another six U.S. Marines and three ARVN were injured. The lost American personnel included Cpl William R. Embry, Pfc Laurence B. Green, LCpl Patrick R. Hendrickson, and SSgt Rodney S. Kiaha. Marines investigating the incident believed the shells were command detonated. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

I was in Boot Camp with PFC Green. Sorry he didn't make it. I was late to 'Nam. Didn't get there till long after we lost him. Was in USMC schools of one kind or another for two years. Should have been me.
