Ground Casualty

PFC James B. Gore served at Da Nang Air Base in Quang Nam Province, RVN, with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron-1 (H&HS-1), Marine Wing Headquarters Group 1, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Amphibious Force. Marine Wing Headquarters Group 1 provided the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing with support in air control, air defense, administration, and maintenance of Wing Headquarters camp facilities. Gore played an important logistical role for the Wing in food service where his primary responsibility was the preparation and service of meals. At 1:45 AM on March 16, 1967, Gore was found in a Vietnamese house in the village of Hoa Phut, approximately two kilometers (1.6 miles) southwest of the airfield. He was found lying face down with a gunshot wound to the head. No vital signs were detected. An M14 rifle was under his legs. His body was removed to the First Medical Battalion on base where staff pronounced him dead. Gore was 19 years old. Both a Catholic and Protestant chaplain performed last rites. Positive identification of the remains was established by an Armed Forces ID card and members of H&HS-1 command. When the Marines issued a casualty report, it indicated that Gore had taken his own life. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
