Silver Star Medal Award

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private First Class] Luther Nettles Bagnal, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Corporal Bagnal distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 3 February 1971, while serving with Company A, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. When his reconnaissance patrol entered into a heavily mined area, Private First Class Bagnal, despite the peril of his environment, volunteered to lead the patrol through the area. While walking point, Private First Class Bagnal moved out through thick brush and numerous trails with complete disregard for his own safety. Breaking through some heavy brush, Private First Class Bagnal detonated a mine while simultaneously motioning to the remainder of the squad to get down. His courageous effort and individual heroism were directly responsible for saving the lives of several of his comrades. Private First Class Bagnal's gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

In Birthday Memory of Luther Nettles "Chip" Bagnal, III

"Chip", your birthday is February 3rd. In honorable remembrance of you and your military service in Vietnam. I wish the two of us had had a lifetime together. You told me we would get married when you returned from Vietnam, but that was not to be. I will always remember and love you always. Thank you for the short time we had together back in 1970.
Love Always,
Frances Latta Slocum
