Cpl. Dennis "Bags" Bagley
When I saw the wonderful post from Dan Gardner, I immediately flashed back to my early teens & watching Dennis "Bags" Bagley playing ball at Belmont Abbey College, coached by my father, Bill Clarke. My dad succeeded his NYC buddy, Al Maguire, in 1964 (Al left for Marquette) and remained at The Abbey thru 1967. Bags was a family favorite in our house and pure joy to watch play. Had the craziest-looking jumpshot ever! Arms cocked back behind & to the side of his head, lead leg "kicking", he had FUN, but was also an intense competitor - who could SHOOT THE LIGHTS OUT! Playing in the south when it was often so difficult to be a black man, he met that challenge head on and did so with class & character. His USMC service is completely consistent with those attributes. RIP, Corporal Bagley.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear CPL Dennis Bagley, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
With respect, Sir

In my thoughts daily
In 1969, when we served together in Hotel Company, 1st Marines I never knew that you were a college basketball player who played for Coach Al McGuire. That is something. I did know you as a competent squad leader whose marines followed him willingly. I remember your constant smile and your good natured attitude. As your platoon leader, I was always confident that you would get the job done no matter the circumstances. During the toughest moments of combat your leadership was at its best. You were a special marine and a hero. It was my honor to have served with you. May God bless your family and your memory. Semper Fidelis.
