Ground Casualty

SGT Adolfo Gonzalez-Lopez was a Unit Supply Sergeant serving with B Company, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 11th Aviation Group, 1st Cavalry Division. Arriving in Vietnam in May 1970 during the period of American drawdown, Gonzalez-Lopez served while the 1st Cavalry Division was conducting troop withdrawals for its impending departure back to the U.S. In February 1971, Gonzalez-Lopez experienced a health crisis while serving at Long Thanh North Army Airfield on Bearcat Base near the city of Bien Hoa in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. He was medically evacuated to the U.S. Army Hospital at Camp Zama in Japan for treatment of pancreatitis. On February 22nd, both his medical condition and personal morale suffered, and his prognosis was reported as guarded. Doctors treating him contemplated transfer to the United States for further treatment; however, no date was assigned. Gonzalez-Lopez expired three days later as a result of liver failure and hypoxemia (low blood oxygen) secondary to pancreatitis. He was 21 years old. A later autopsy revealed cancer of the stomach which had spread throughout his abdomen and heart and lung cavity. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
