Ground Casualty
PFC John A. Goldsbery II was a field wireman serving with Communication Support Company, 7th Communication Battalion, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force. During June 1968, the 7th Communication Battalion provided radio, communication center, radio relay and telephone support throughout the I Corps Area (Military Region I). Goldsbery’s responsibilities included installing telephones and switchboards, laying wire and cable, and adjusting equipment for proper operation. On June 3rd, he was off duty recreational swimming in the Song Cau Do (River) near the railroad and National Route QL-1 bridge crossing, four kilometers (2.4 miles) south of Da Nang in Quang Nam Province, RVN. While cooling off in the water, he reportedly disappeared under the surface and was not seen again. His body was located and positively identified two days later. Goldsbery had been in Vietnam only six weeks. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and “7th Comm Bn Logistics Summary Report for June 1968” at ttu.edu]
