Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. While all deaths in Vietnam are tragic that you died just six days before your 21st birthday is especially so. May you rest in eternal peace.

Final Mission of SP4 Michael D. Goeller

On May 1, 1969, SP4 Michael D. Goeller was a gunner on a U.S. Army helicopter UH-1C (tail number 65-09523) from the 116th Assault Helicopter Company. His aircraft was providing close air support when it was engaged by enemy small arms fire. The bottom of the helicopter received at least five hits, damaging the fuel system and the main rotor system, and causing fatal injuries to SP4 Goeller. The aircraft was able to continue flight and diverted from its mission objectives, presumably to the nearest medical facility. [Taken from vhpa.org]
