Wish I could have met you Uncle Bill
Dear Uncle Bill,
I was 2 weeks old when we lost you and I have grown up knowing who you are and how great you were. So much of losing you doesn't make sense and there will never be the answer to why, but know that your sister has kept you alive in all the stories and memories she has shared with us, your nieces and nephew.
I am sure you met my Dad in heaven back in Feb 2019 and I can imagine what a reunion that was! Thank you for your service and sacrifice, it was not in vain, and we remember you always.
Love your brunette niece, Kathy

My brother and friend
We met in Ft. Campbell as fellow paratroopers in 1966. Both assigned as helicopter crewmen we became fast friends. Went to Vietnam together in 1967. Got to know your family and girlfriend via your mail. Was going to be best man at your wedding. Wanted to fly in your seat on the day you died, but you changed your mind at the last minute. I was pissed, but we made up right before 477 took off.
I walked up to maintenance tent while Richardson said “quiet Pete, 477 went down”. The radio was on and I heard you. Dying.
I cried, I yelled, I drank, I forced WO Gilbert to go out there. Nothing.
Broken dreams, much survival guilt, anger at protesters and government, confusion, more alcohol. Travel to your home and family with Zok. Years of questioning.
Gratitude for meeting and knowing you. Many tears at the Wall and home, and with our other brothers that shared our hearts and dreams with each other.
Thank you,Bill, for still being with me 55 years later. It was yesterday.
