Honor to a Corpsman

As his Plt Commander at the time of death it is appropriate to leave a comment. I was only with the 2nd Plt for a very short period so really knew little of the platoon – took command just a few days before the battle on the 27th. Been in the bush since Oct of 67.

Earlier that day we walked into an ambush and lost a lot of guys so we were understrength as we crossed on open field – spread out and ready – ready cept since we were approaching friendly lines we were ordered to have out safeties on – in hind sight that was a dump command from the Bn XO.

As were nearing some deep ground cover and NVA popped up and took aim on Doc Bacorn; I immediacy took aim and fired – cept the safety was on. The NVA got off his shot before I could get my safety off and blow him away (along with an NVA Lt a few minutes later).

I am finally able to recall names (some mental suppression going on); always have remembered the scenes of battle down to where the casualties lay. For sure remember the scene of Doc & the NVA – vivid as if it were yesterday. I was reminded of Doc Bacorn at our last 3rd Bn 4th Marines reunion.

HN Bacorn died a Marine – for that I give him the highest honor!

John Holladay
Former Captain of Marines.

PS Battle never ends for those involved.
