A man I wish I had known.
In 1998, at a traveling Wall in North Carolina, I was deeply moved, and able for the first time to tell with clarity my experience of the Vietnam years.
I made a rubbing of Nilon’s name, knowing only that his home was in East Tennessee. But I have since researched his life and death, was honored to meet “Holmes,” his best friend in Vietnam, and have told much about him in my storytelling.
Out of respect for their privacy, I have not reached out to his family, but honor his life and, with deep humility, recognize his sacrifice.
