Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for Valor

Petty Officer Second Class Martin L. Gillespie, Jr., in addition to the previously posted Navy Cross Award, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device (V), for his sustained acts of heroism and meritorious service. He served as a HM-8404-Medical Field Service Technician/FMF Combat Corpsman and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment.

Petty Officer Second Class Martin L. Gillespie Jr., Served with the Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, Third Marine Amphibious Force. He was assigned to the 2nd Platoon, Company D, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, when he was killed in action.
