Ground Casualty

SP4 Mark W. Bacher was an infantryman serving with A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. On May 18, 1970, Bacher was found dead in his bunk at Tay Ninh Base Camp in Tay Ninh Province, RVN. The initial casualty report issued by the Army listed the cause of death as “Unknown.” An investigation was conducted, and an autopsy performed. The post-mortem findings reported fluid in his lungs with recent bleeding. When a death certificate was issued, the cause remained “Unknown.” It is unclear what the investigation into Bacher’s death uncovered; however, suspicion that foul play was suspected is evident on one of the Remains Processing forms where “Found in bed – possible suffocation” was included in the notes. Bacher was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Mark Warren Bacher, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
