Ground Casualty
SP4 Lawrence E. Bach was an infantryman serving with B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. On May 22, 1967, Bach was critically injured when a friendly grenade accidently detonated while he was on road defense in Vietnam. After emergency treatment in Vietnam and Japan, he was medically evacuated to a U.S. military hospital in Manila, Philippines, where he succumbed to pulmonary embolism on June 27, 1967. Bach’s parents were at his side when he died, having flown to the Philippines on June 18th. It was one of the first times that the parents of a man wounded in action had been present at their son’s death from a battle action on foreign soil. Remembering An American Hero
Dear SP4 Lawrence Edward Bach, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter
