Ground Casualty

SP4 Lawrence E. Bach was an infantryman serving with B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. On May 22, 1967, Bach was critically injured when a friendly grenade accidently detonated while he was on road defense in Vietnam. After emergency treatment in Vietnam and Japan, he was medically evacuated to a U.S. military hospital in Manila, Philippines, where he succumbed to pulmonary embolism on June 27, 1967. Bach’s parents were at his side when he died, having flown to the Philippines on June 18th. It was one of the first times that the parents of a man wounded in action had been present at their son’s death from a battle action on foreign soil.
