THE WALL OF FACES

Walter and I attended Jungle School for two weeks together in June 1969. I believe we may have been on the same flight to Vietnam too. I was assigned to 3rd Platoon, B Troop, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry (Armored). I met up with Walter in the field as both our units were assigned to protect an engineer company with Rome plow bulldozers. They were knocking down trees to create express routes into the Le Hong Fong Forest north of Phan Thiet. I learned after this mission with the engineers he was KIA in an ambush. RIP Walter.

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

Hoot, I remember you as a friend at North Georgia College. While you were generally calm and quiet, I have no doubt you were a good leader and took care of you men in Nam. You are missed among your classmates.
