Ground Casualty
PFC Harold D. Gibbs was a Field Radio Operator serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force. During the month of July 1966, the 3/7 Marines participated in security and search and destroy operations in the vicinity of Chu Lai in Quang Tin Province, RVN. On July 1st, Gibbs was fatally injured in an accidental discharge incident near Chu Lai. Reportedly, another Marine’s M14 rifle was inadvertently fired, the errant round striking Gibbs in the upper right chest. A Marine volunteer, he was 21 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
