Misadventure (Friendly fire)
Operation MacArthur was a U.S. Army military operation conducted by the 4th Infantry Division in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam from October 1967 to January 1969. The division was responsible for the defense of the provincial and district capitals that lay along National Highway QL-14, an interprovincial paved road that ran north to south through the middle of the Central Highlands. The general mission was to conduct surveillance and offensive operations along the Cambodian border and destroy North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong units within the assigned area of operations. On August 14, 1968, A Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry was conducting search and destroy operations in an area nineteen miles north of Ban Me Thuot in Darlac Province, RVN. At 4:00 PM, an American fighter aircraft making a strafing run nearby accidently fired on their position. One U.S. personnel was killed, infantryman PFC Angelo Giacobbe, and fifteen others were wounded. Dear PFC Angelo Giacobbe,
Thank you for your service as an Infantryman. Happy Advent. It has been too long, and it's about time for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear PFC Angelo Giacobbe, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
