You will never be forgotten

It is the day after Veterans' Day, 2002. I've been thinking of you for days. David, you were my hero.
On May 26, 1970, at the age of 20, David perished in South Vietnam, Quang Tin. That’s all they said. You were my hero, and that’s all they would say about how you died.
I’ve since learned. The place; Dragon Valley. You; a 155mm Howitzer Section Chief. What unit, I still don’t know; either the 3rd of the 82nd or the 1st of the 14th Artillery. In support of First Battalion, 46th Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, your position took enemy fire. You died. From multiple fragmentation wounds. Five Americans died in the valley that day. Men had been dying all week, all month. They kept dying.
All told, 233 casualties were members of 46th or from units deployed with them.
Later, I followed your footsteps, but I came home. I will never forget you.
