Ground Casualty

SGT Sherman Avant was a communications technician serving with B Company, 523rd Signal Battalion, 23rd Infantry Division (Americal), U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. At 7:10 AM on March 23, 1971, Avant was found dead in his bed at his base camp at Duc Pho in Quang Ngia Province, RVN. His body was transported to the U.S. Army Mortuary at Da Nang where it was released to Graves Registration personnel. A subsequent autopsy found that he aspirated the contents of his stomach following acute alcohol intoxication. The postmortem exam also noted fatty metamorphosis of the liver, a common finding in patients with a history of severe alcoholism. Avant, 32 years old, was an Army veteran with 10 years of service. Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

As long as you are remembered you will never die...
