SP5 David H. Fisher, SGT James E. Foster, SSG Billy Knight, and CPT Roy H. Wilson were members of Mobile Advisory Team 56 (MAT 56), assigned to MACV (Military Assist Command, Vietnam) Team 56 operating in Phong Dinh Province in the Mekong Delta. In the early morning of October 22, 1968, the four advisors were traveling in a jeep on Highway 4 to Eakin Compound in Can Tho to exchange Military Payment Certificates for newly issued MPC’s. At approximately 7:30 AM, a 105mm artillery shell placed in the road by local Viet Cong exploded under their jeep. The blast destroyed the vehicle and killed instantly its four passengers. Alerted to the ambush, a company of South Vietnamese Regional Forces accompanied by two American advisors arrived on the scene. Two Dustoffs (medical evacuation by helicopters) were used to remove the bodies which were taken to the 774th Medical Dispensary at Can Tho Army Airfield. A week later, a memorial service was conducted for the lost advisors in the chapel at Eakin Compound. Their loss hit Team 56 very hard, and its Province Senior Advisor, a U.S. Army colonel, put out a travel restriction which limited two Americans per jeep while traveling on province roads. Dear Sgt James Foster,
Thank you for your service as an Infantryman/Instructor. It has been too long, and it's about time for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Dear SGT James Earnest Foster, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
