I held Capt Flahive as his final breath left his body.
I called Cpt. Flahive over to the control tower at the Khe Sanh Combat Base. He was struck by shrapnel from a mortar blast. I went to him but he was breathing his last breath.

Final Mission of CAPT William J. Flahive Jr.
CAPT William J. Flahive Jr. served with Marine Air Traffic Control Unit 62 (MACTU-62), Marine Air Group 36 (MAG-36), 1st Marine Air Wing (1st MAW), III Marine Amphibious Force. During January 1968, MACTU-62 provided air traffic control service under all weather conditions at Dong Ha and Khe Sanh airfields in Quang Tri Province, RVN. Flahive was at Khe Sanh on January 31st when enemy mortar fire was launched against the base. He was fatally injured after sustaining multiple fragmentation wounds to the body.
