A Moment in Time
One other thing Norm, after I got home I wanted to make a trip to your home town to see your folks, and tell them I had served with you and was with you when you passed but I couldn't bring myself at the time to go there so I apologize to you now for not making that trip.

A Moment in Time
Dear Norm,
I've carried you in my heart all these years as I was at your side when you died,I was your RTO ,Paul Bernheim. When the first round landed at the bottom of the hill we were on I jumped for the ground and a few seconds later you were gone as more rounds landed all around,it was only those few seconds that spared me and took you, those few seconds when I jumped for cover and you didn't. That moment in time has been with me all these years ,almost 50 years now as I've gotten older and you are still a very young 1st Lt.Perhaps we can catch up when my time comes,be well my friend ,be well.

So Long Ago
I was a platoon leader in the company Norm was assigned to as our Forward Observer. I was near his side when he was killed - he was in the act of adjusting two batteries of artillery walking them across an enemy position. Norm was very good at his job - professional, competent, capable - with a great personality to match. We lost a great friend and FO.... the Army lost a great officer with a very bright future...
