Ground Casualty
SP4 James E. Fields was an infantryman serving with B Company, 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Infantry Brigade. On June 20, 1967, SP4 Fields was bathing in a river near a settlement named Giong Ong Nhieu (“His Voice Many”), five miles east of Saigon (downtown), Gia Dinh Province, RVN, when he went missing. The only witness, a Popular Forces soldier, claimed Fields was standing in shallow water rinsing soap off his face when he went under and did not come up. A search of the area, including down river as the tide was going out, was made with negative results. Five days later, a body recovered was positively identified as Fields.
