Tribute to Sky Soldier

On behalf of all the paratroopers who served with you in the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate) and all who followed, we offer our respect and remembrance of your ultimate sacrifice. May you never be forgotten and your family and friends take comfort in your valor in serving.

Thank you.

As morbid as this sounds, without your death, I would not be here. When you died my grandfather escorted your body back and he and my grandmother (your cousin) met at the funeral and soon after got married. You were brave and to hear the stories about you is incredible. I carry jump wings on my lanyard to remember you by and to remind me that life isn't cheap and that without your lose, I would not have been born. I don't take that for granted.

One day....

Uncle Herman,
I want to say thank you for your service. I am your niece, daughter of Jerry Fields. I have heard so many stories about you. Over the years, I have met some people who knew you, too. I am so thankful to have heard about your legacy and I look forward to the day of truly meeting you. I pray that my dad and grandfather are with you in Heaven. I love you.

You are always loved and extremely missed Herman T. Fields.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Fields

A young man full of life [- so much to give - he gave all

Herman was a cousin and he came to see me not long before he died. He came home but was going back with an agreement that he would stay a short time and when he left his military time would be over. He was happy and cut up and laughed that day more than ever before. We said bye but little did we know it was the last time. He was brave - he loved his country - and he gave all.
