Ground Casualty

The 91st Evacuation Hospital was located at Chu Lai in Quang Tin Province, RVN. The facility was situated on a cliff overlooking the South China Sea midway between Da Nang and Qui Nhon. The hospital operated in direct support of the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal) in both Quang Tin and Quang Ngai provinces in the southern portion of Military Region I. Dispensary and out-patient services also provided medical care for 1500 Army personnel assigned to the massive Chu Lai Base Area. On the early morning of May 24, 1970, an operating room specialist was found deceased in one of the operating bays after he asphyxiated from an overdose of an anesthetic. SP5 Thomas L. Farmer was discovered on the floor with a hose from a nitrous oxide tank in his mouth. Postmortem studies determined Farmer suffocated after aspirating the contents of his stomach. Aspiration occurs when foreign material is inhaled into the airway blocking the respiratory tract. It happens during sleep when the sedating effects of alcohol or drugs impair cough and gag reflexes. Farmer was 20 years old. His body was escorted home from Vietnam to Pueblo, CO, by his brother, Dean S. Farmer Jr., a civilian worker at the Foremost Dairy at Da Nang in Quang Nam Province.
