Ground Casualty
Vung Tau Airfield was a Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF) facility located near the city of Vung Tau in Phuoc Tuy Province, RVN. The U.S. Army’s 345th Medical Detachment maintained a dispensary on the base. During the first half of 1966, SP5 Thomas J. Fallon Jr. was a medical non-commissioned officer (NCO) serving with the 345th. Fallon was veteran with fourteen years of service in the Army including a previous overseas posting to Frankfurt, Germany, where he was worked at the 97th General Hospital. While in Vietnam, Fallon was receiving treatment for an alcohol use disorder when he was found dead in his bunk in his unit’s area on June 6, 1966. A medical statement on his Army-issued death certificate noted that Fallon had sustained head trauma in falls on May 28th and the night before he expired (June 5th), with acute alcohol intake directly leading to his death. He was thirty-five years old. Fallon was survived by his mother and three children by his ex-wife. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
