Final Mission of LCPL David R. Faehnrich
LCPL David R. Faehnrich was a mortarman serving with 81mm Mortar Platoon, Headquarters & Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On August 27, 1967, LCPL Faehnrich was on a search and destroy mission with his unit near Hai Lang in Quang Tri Province, RVN. Faehnrich was an ammo carrier with mortar squad, carrying three or four mortar rounds in addition to his rucksack and weapon, bringing his total load to between 75 and 100 pounds. After about three hours on the move, the intense heat of the day took its toll on Faehnrich. Concerned, his squad leader passed word to the Captain he had a man going down from heat and was in a bad way, but they were told to keep moving to an area farther along so a medivac helicopter could land. Faehnrich was relieved of his gear, and a couple of the Marines supported him on each side. They made it to the medivac area and put him in care of the corpsman in the Command Post group. Despite his critical condition, a priority was not put on his evacuation and there was a delay before the helicopter got to him. Not long after being evacuated, word came back that Faehnrich had expired. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and information provided by Steven Weston (April 2019)]
