SP5 DAVID JAMES EWING WAS MY COUSIN
David was my cousin. Before he set out on this second tour of duty, he and his mother -- Gail Patton Ewing, my father's sister -- traveled from MI to NY to visit us. His mother did not want him to go back to Vietnam. Yet he was committed to his work as a Dustoff, rescuing the wounded, and had to go. David was killed on 22 May 1969, his mother's birthday. That day changed my life. I have since visited his grave in Arlington National Cemetery and know from one of his colleagues the horrific details of his death. I am forever grateful for his service and for that of those with whom he served. I just wish that he could have lived longer to serve all those he felt called to help.

Thank You
Dear Sp5 David Ewing,
Thank you for your service as a Flight Qualified Medical NCO. Thank you for the lives you saved. It has been too long, and it's about time for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

My brother, Robert Layman flew with David.
My brother, Robert Layman, was the pilot the day their helicopter was shot down. These brave men all gave their lives in the effort to save others.
