Ultimate Sacrifice

My father was Paul's football coach at Augustana College. I was 10 years old when Paul made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. News of Paul's death hit my father hard, and I recall watching my father cry for the first time in my young life. I was naive and confused, not fully understanding the full context and tragedy of Paul's death, but I did recognize that Paul was unique among the hundreds of players my father coached and how his bright and creative spirit touched the lives of many. Through tears of anger and grief, my father recalled how Paul, after a particularly bruising game, painted his room black and blue to reflect his post-game sentiment. Near 60 years later, it remains difficult to understand the enormous loss of Paul's colorful spirit and leaves me to wonder what color best represents Paul's honor, bravery, and sacrifice.
