According to Joe's military records he was awarded the Silver Star for heroism.

Dear Sp4 Joe Evans.
I hope your photo is put here because this is a wall of faces and yours should be here. Thank you for your service as a Medical NCO. Thank you for the lives you saved. It is important for us to remember all of you. It has been too long, and it's about time for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Spec. 4/c U.S. Army, {US54819534}, Vietnam War-Spec. Evans was killed in action by a Mortar Attack on 5-20-1968 while serving as a Combat Medic with the HHB of the 1st Battalion, 27th Artillery, II Field Force. Spec. Evans started his tour of Vietnam on 1-1-1968.

He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Joe H. Evans of 665 East 131st Street, Chicago, Illinois.

Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Medical Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with One Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal.
