Ground Casualty
SSG Hebert J. Artis served with the 15th Aerial Port Squadron in Da Nang, RVN. His unit was responsible for loading and unloading aircraft with all the supplies and materials necessary for the war effort, including the bodies of those killed in action. He also oversaw the dispatch operation and was responsible for having a crew assigned to each incoming and outgoing aircraft. On June 27, 1971, Artis died at Naval Support Activity Station Hospital in Da Nang where he was taken after reportedly being accidentally shot with a .45 pistol.
