SSgt Hebert J. Artis served with the 15th Aerial Port Squadron, 7th Air Force, at Da Nang Airbase in Quang Nam Province, RVN. Artis’ unit was responsible for loading and unloading aircraft with supplies and materials needed for the war effort and transported the bodies of Americans who died in Vietnam. Artis also oversaw dispatch operations and was responsible for having a crew assigned to each incoming and outgoing aircraft. On June 27, 1971, Artis died at Naval Support Activity Station Hospital in Da Nang thirty minutes after sustaining a gunshot wound to the right-center chest. The incident reportedly occurred from an accidental discharge of a .45 caliber pistol. Artis was 39 years old.
