Remembering An American Hero

Dear WO Phillip Fred Arnold, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Final Mission WO1 Phillip F. Arnold

On May 17, 1970, a U.S. Army helicopter CH-47C (tail number 67-18497) from B Company (Varsity), 159th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 101st Airborne was operating in Quang Tri Province (I Corps) when it was shot down. The aircraft was at level flight at 100 feet and 50 knots of air speed when it came under enemy fire. The helicopter was hit by at least five rounds, one which perforated the forward transmission sump and may have resulted in a hydraulic failure. The aircraft crashed causing fatal injuries to the five crew members aboard. They included pilots WO1 Phillip F. Arnold, CWO George C. Schultz Jr., crew chief SGT David W. Smith, flight engineer SFC Sammie E. Alexander, and gunner SGT Roy A. Petty Jr. [Taken from vhpa.org]

Army Basic thru Flight School

You and I were in the same basic unit, and went to flight school together. You were a good friend, and I hope I was one to you. We were split after going to Rucker, I think you were in 69-43 and I wound up in 69-45. You went to Viet Nam about a month before I did. Joyce knew you had died but wouldn't tell me for several months.
