Ground Casualty

PFC Alexander W. Duplessie was an Aircraft Structural Repairer with the 134th Assault Helicopter Company, 286th Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. The 134th Assault Helicopter Company was based at Tuy Hoa Air Base in Phu Yen Province, RVN. Their helicopters were complex machines and required very high levels of maintenance. Mechanics and airframe repairmen like Duplessie worked day and night. When finished, these same maintenance men dug wells, poured sidewalks, repaired roofs, fixed air conditioners and refrigerators, and built showers and latrines. At 12:30 PM on July 15, 1971, Duplessie was found in his billets at Tuy Hoa with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left temple. An M16 rifle lay next to his body. He was treated by medical staff at Tuy Hoa, then flown to the 67th Evacuation Hospital at Qui Nhon where he was dead on arrival. Duplessie was 20 years old.
