THE WALL OF FACES

Steve used to visit with my family often during high school. Steve was a track athlete and excelled at sprints. We continued our contact and friendship including my Christmas leave from the Academy when Steve told us he enlisted in the Marine Corps that day. Steve will always be in my heart and thoughts.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Dear PFC Stephen Dowdell,
Thank you for your service as a Tank Crewnan. We remember all you who gave their all. It has been too long, and it's about time for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Stephen and I went from Bootcamp thru ITR and through tank school and on to Vietnam together. For some unknown reason you went to MPs when our boots hit the ground while most of us went to Alpha Co. 3rd Tanks. We saw each other only on occasion and each time you wanted to come back. Finally, in July 1969 you were returned to us for our last operation, Idaho Canyon. It turned out to be such a short stay, Stephen.
I have never lost sight of you from that day until now nor will I ever. You are a warrior guarding heavens gates until the rest of us get there.
