We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you, one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam:
Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul ... and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.

Rest in Peace, Johnny.
Johnny and I were in basic training together @ Fort Bragg graduating in July 1969. He was such a likeable guy, always quick with a joke. He was a country boy who got stuck in a platoon of city boys from Los Angeles (me) and Philly. Because of that he took a lot of good natured ribbing. Everyone liked him and you could always count on him to get the job done. That quality probably had something to do with what eventually happened to him less than a year later.
I have a scrap of paper that indicates that at one time I owed him $3. I believe I did pay him back, but I'm not certain.
