We Will Remember
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Attack on Landing Zone Jerri – November 11, 1969
Landing Zone Jerri was located three miles southwest of the Bu Dop Special Forces camp near the Cambodian border in Phuoc Long Province, RVN. The North Vietnamese Army’s 7th Division had a base camp in Cambodia just north of the Bu Dop, purportedly their local South Vietnamese Regional Headquarters. In a coordinated effort, the NVA executed a plan to attack American and South Vietnamese targets on November 11, 1969 (Veterans Day in the United States). The attacks were scheduled to coincide with a major antiwar moratorium demonstration on that same date in Washington D.C. At approximately 2:15 AM on the 11th, LZ Jerri came under a heavy barrage of mortar, rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), and small arms fire. From a position on the western perimeter, Quad 24 of Battery D, 71st Artillery, engaged the mortar positions approximately 75 meters from the northwest side of the perimeter. Quad 13, in position on the southern perimeter, engaged small arms and RPG positions in a tree line in front of its position. The attack continued until 2:35 AM. A total of five U.S. were killed in the attack. The lost Americans included SP4 Clark R. Douglas, PFC Harry J. Jackson Jr., PFC Charles J. Keitt, PFC Richard S. Leach, and SP4 Roger L. Tallman. Another ten U.S. were wounded, three of which were from 5/2 Arty. One Quad received light damage and one searchlight was a combat loss. A sweep, conducted at first light, resulted in more contact with the enemy. A final sweep of the area resulted in the discovery of several Viet Cong and NVA dead, one of whom was credited to the team operating Quad 24 by the officer in charge of the landing zone.
