Misadventure (Friendly Fire)

On the evening of July 14, 1965, a friendly-fire incident occurred when a U.S. Marine 4.2” “Howtar” heavy mortar round landed in the E Company 2/3 Marines Command Post area three miles southwest of Nam-O Bridge in Quang Nam Province, RVN. Two men from E Company, 2LT James E. Parmelee and SGT Donald R. Vinson, and one Navy corpsman, HN Robert P. Dionne, were killed. Nine others were wounded, six seriously. As the fire mission was being conducted, the Forward Observer was adjusting fire when a round fell short into a group of men gathered around a Lyster [lister] bag (used for dispensing potable water). The Tactical Air Control Party at the position called for a medical evacuation of the dead and wounded. Seven aircraft were launched and the evacuation was completed by 7:00 PM.
