CAPTAIN "MIKE" DICKE, A MARINE CORPS VIETNAM HERO

Mike was a fellow Vietnamese Marine Advisor in 1971. He had returned to Saigon to out-process for his return home at completion of his Vietnam tour, when he was asked to return to Quang Tri to participate in a large-scale VNMC operation with 7th Battalion, Brigade 147, VNMC. Mike valiantly agreed. I was the other USMC Advisor with the 7th Battalion. I rode in to the Landing Zone on the first helo. When Mike flew in, he relieved me to direct the rest of the helo insertion and took my position between three boulders beside the LZ. The round that killed Mike would have killed me if Mike had not relieved me there for me to join the lead elements of the Battalion down the ridgeline. And, had Mike not heroically agreed to return to combat to partipate in that operation, he would have returned home uninjured! I was blessed to know him, albeit for only one day!
