Ground Casualty
On October 23, 1967, a jeep carrying three Seabees from D Company, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 121 (NMCB-121), hit a land mine approximately two miles south of Phu Bai Combat Base in Thua Thien Province, RVN. Driver SWC Gordon J. Dibble and passenger BUR3 Jon R. Morvay suffered fatal blast and shrapnel injuries in the explosion. LT Joseph J. Rhodes was critically injured and evacuated to A Medical Battalion, Third Marine Division at Phu Bai Combat Base where he later expired. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
