Had it not been for you, Top...

...I might not be writing this today. I was about to walk to breakfast with you on that sad day when you noted I was without my hat as that visiting Marine general had gotten on my case about a few days earlier. I turned on my heel to fetch my hat and you proceeded to the mess hall door just as that rocket came in. I was at your side a moment later, but you were gone. Mess SFC Pierce, holding the door open for you, died that day as well.

I think of you often and your daughter Ava and son too.

1Lt Ashley W. Wright
XO, B. Battery 8/4

Ground Casualty

Fire Support Base C-1 was located along National Route QL-1 at the intersection with Route 605, approximately four miles northwest of Dong Ha in Quang Tri Province, RVN. The base was on the eastern flank of “Leatherneck Square,” an area just south of the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone that separated North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Some of the heaviest fighting of the Vietnam War was fought in this 54+ square mile area. On August 8, 1969, Battery B, 8th Battalion, 4th Artillery located at C-1 incurred two killed and ten wounded after four 140mm rockets were fired at the base around 7:10 AM. One of the projectiles impacted approximately ten yards from the Unit mess hall, fatally injuring artilleryman 1SG Pedro De Herrera and cook SFC George W. Pierce. honoring you...

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.
