Remembrance

We trained together at Fort Benning, GA taking the Infantry Officers Basic Course. He lived across the hall, and we went out for a drink with our roommates when we had a chance. After a couple of beers one night, we admitted to each other how concerned we were that we would not make it. Somebody broke the silence saying if we are concerned how do you think the VC feel! He was a fine officer as well as a nice guy. I think of him often, and am saddened when I think he died so young with his whole life ahead of him with unfulfilled dreams.

Angel Day

On this your angel day I humbly give thanks for your service and sacrifice and with honor I leave you this poem . . .

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Lt. Dee

It was easier to just call him Lt. Dee. I remember him as a quiet, gentle, very careful person. He was killed in an ambush in the Chu Pa Mtns., RVN two days before Holloween of 1969. Jerome Hatter died that day as well. I can assure you that neither suffered. I feel I'm a better person for having known him and think of him often.
